Environmental health officers in the spotlight - specialist communications training for EHOs

Outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, food poisoning and local pollution problems frequently hit the headlines raising fears about public health and safety.

This one-day media-training course provides clear guidance for environmental health professionals and other frontline staff on how to manage the media in a crisis. Whether it's a local noise complaint, a food poisoning incident or a local pollution incident you need more than a sound byte. You will learn how to avoid the media pitfalls and get the right message across to your local community.

This specialist one-day course is designed to help build public confidence in your environmental health services.

Key topics covered include:
  • managing the media in a crisis
  • how to prepare your media message - what to say and how to say it
  • how to conduct TV and radio interviews, stay 'on message' and avoid the pitfalls
  • how to prepare a press release
  • how to use the media at national, regional and local level
  • your introduction to blogging, podcasting and other new media communications

This course also includes practical exercises in live broadcast interviewing, writing press releases and managing the media.

Training Pack — A comprehensive media training pack is provided, including programme, exercise material, press release guide and interview checklists. You will also receive a performance evaluation which will help define your organisation's media strengths and requirements.

The course will be run by former BBC Environment Correspondent John Barwise (Registered environmental auditor and member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment).
