Environmental media skills course for environmental organisations and other non-governmental organisations

Media communication is a powerful tool, but do you know how to use it? Are you clear about your message and can you cope with broadcast interviews? Can you run an effective media campaign?

Communication is an integral part of your organisation’s development. Getting the right message across in a way we all understand helps sustain our interest in what you do. If your organisation is protecting the environment, supporting the local community or helping to promote a better quality of life for everyone, this course is for you.

The aim of the course is to help you understand how the media works, identify good stories and get your message effectively.

Course Outline – Getting the most out of the media

Key subjects on this course:

  • explain how the media works
  • find out what the media want from you
  • what’s good about a press release 
  • how to get the message across effectively – pressing the right buttons
  • Live radio-style broadcast interviews and presentation techniques
  • Live TV-style broadcast interviews and presentation techniques
  • peer reviews of broadcast interview sessions
  • your introduction to blogging, podcasting and other new media communications

The programme also includes several practical exercises in press release writing, presentation skills and broadcast interviewing.

Learning outcomes: This course will help you get your message across more effectively. Key outcomes include:

  • understanding how the media works (general press, science and trade journals and broadcasters at national/regional level)
  • how to get your message across and avoid pitfalls in the broadcast media
  • how to sustain the learning experience after the course

The course will be run by media coach and former BBC Environment Correspondent John Barwise AIEMA

Training Pack — All topics on this course are included in a comprehensive media training pack including programme, exercise material, press release guide and interview checklists. You will also receive a performance evaluation which will help define your organisation's media strengths and requirements.
